Web of Science (WOS) platform added a new function "Citing Items by Classification", which helps us quickly locate the required literature by classifying citing references according to the reasons for their citation. 

 

Citing references refer to the relevant literature that cites a particular article. In order to quickly locate subsequent citing references that have important value, Web of Science Core Collection has added Citing Items by Classification view on the full record page of a paper. It can breakdown how the article has been mentioned, based on available citation context data and snippets from the citing items. By classifying the citing references of the paper according to their citation motivations, this feature helps us quickly understand the specific reasons why the paper has been cited.

Citing reference citation motivation classification:
• Background: The citing reference cites the paper as research background.
• Basis: The citing reference directly cites the data, methods, concepts, and ideas in the paper.
• Support: The citing reference has similar research results as the paper, or has similarity in methods, or can reproduce the research results in certain situations.
• Differ: The citing reference has different results than the paper, or has differences in methods, or may have different results due to differences in sample size.
• Discuss: The citing reference provides a more detailed discussion.

After clicking on a citation motivation category of a citing reference, we can see the number of times the paper has been cited in the citing references, as well as the location and context of the original text where it was cited. This helps us better judge which citing references are more important to us.

The search results page has also added Citation Class sorting method, which allows us to quickly obtain the required literature by prioritizing the five citation categories.
